Live Oaks in Georgia
On one of my trips home, I happened to take one of the remote dirt roads off of the main state road I usually take. After traveling approximately two or three miles, I came up on this trail, lined with moss laden ancient Live Oaks. It was like going back in time. There was a stillness, a serenity in this place that I cannot describe, so opposite from Interstates, shopping malls and urban sprawl in Atlanta. This oil painting is the result of several pencil sketches that I made using the hood of my car as a drawing table.
Live Oaks in Dover Community
Located in Scrieven County, Georgia, this highway was once the major route to Louisville, Georgia, at one time the state capital of Georgia. Even though these Live Oaks survived Gen. Sherman's march through Georgia, they are now threatened by the Department of Transportation because they are in the highway's ride of way.

What a great story! I often wonder what inspires a painter to do what they do. I really enjoyed reading your blog and I look forward to seeing more!
ReplyDeletePs. It is so sad that they could go through a war and be demolished by the DOT! I am speechless
